The Batman, mediocre or masterpiece?

The Batman recently released on HBO Max and digital over a month after its theatrical release and after a second viewing we think it really is worth the hype. The movie stars Robert Pattison as the dark knight alongside indie actress Zoe Kravits as the titular Catwoman as they face a force unlike any they’ve experienced before. So what makes it so great?

The very first thing to take into account is story. After two years as the masked vigilante “Vengeance”, Batman encounters a criminal unlike any he’s seen before, The Riddler, a twisted killer targeting Gothams elite political figures as he tries to reveal the corruption whispered throughout the city. Batman works alongside Jeffery Wright's portrayal of Jim Gordon as they investigate the Zodiac-like puzzles left at the crime scenes. Batman and Kravits Catwoman share an on screen romance / rivalry as they help each other uncover the truth. Colin Farrel also stars in the movie as an unrecognisable Oswald Cobblepot, also known as Penguin, a mobster reaching out for his slice of Gotham.

Every actor in the movie gives a standout performance. Robert Pattison does so much with so little as he plays a reclusive interpretation of Bruce as he struggles with his damaged view on life, it’s said he based his Bruce Wayne off of the late Kurt Kobaine, lead singer of the infamous rock band Nirvana. However, what about when he puts the cowl on? Pattison plays Batman with a sharp aggression, going from completely silent telling the story with his eyes to a rageful beast brutalising the criminals he faces. Paul Dano also gives a stand out performance as The Riddler, a character that mirrors Batman and even idolises him, seeing himself as a vigliante of his own, an orphan fed false lies by Gothams late mayor Thomas Wayne. Riddler’s real appearance is kept hidden for most of the movie so when he does appear he plays the character with a twisted dark gravitas giving him a charm similar to a gameshow host, just one that kills people.

Colin Farrel plays The Penguin, the right hand man to the biggest crime boss in Gotham, Carmine Falcone. However the team's approach to the character includes 5 hours in a  makeup chair completely transforming Colin into the character. The Irish actor also masters the Brooklyn accent making him unrecognisable both visually and audibly. Kravit’s Catwoman crosses paths with The Batman when the case leads him straight to her, fueled by finding her missing friend caught in the middle of the investigation. Kravit’s brings more to the table than just the attractive love interest, bringing an individuality and intelligence to the role that makes her a strong feminine supporting role. Some other actors to note are Peter Sarsgaard as district attorney Gil Colson, Jeffrey Wright’s detective James Gordon, John Turtorro’s Carmine Falcone and Andy Serkis’ Alfred Pennyworth.

The city of Gotham is a character of its own, rich in personality and style. Filmed here in London the rich architect of the towers contrasts with downtown Gotham, a slum slowly flooding, a remnant of a broken promise the politicians of Gotham made that centres around the Wayne heritage, making the investigation so much more personal to Batman. The movie accumulated over 710 million dollars as the sequel is already in the works? What did you think of the batman? Leave your thoughts below and some villains you’d like to see in the sequel.

Peacemaker, a tale of redemption.

It’s been almost a year since The Suicide Squad came out and a couple months since the first season of it’s spin off show Peacemaker released, and after sitting with it for a while, I can confidently say, its beautiful. So what do I mean?

The show stars John Cena as the America loving Peacemaker, a questionable hero who will do anything to keep the peace, even if it means killing. Cena previously played the character in The Suicide Squad when he and the squad was sent to Corto Maltese, a South American island, tasked with destroying information about an alien that the US Government tested on in the island. Peacemaker rivalved Idris Elba’s Bloodsport, the main protagonist of the movie. When US Soldier Rick Flag threatens to release the information, Peacemaker turns on the team, killing Flag and ultimately meeting his demise to Bloodsport after taking a bullet to the neck, or so we thought, an end credit scene shows Peacemaker recovering in a hospital bed back in the states, with Harcourt played by Jennifer Holland and Economos played by Steve Agee tasked to now lead the villain on a new mission to save the world.

Cut forward a few months to the beginning of the show and Peacemaker is tasked to help takedown another alien threat known as The Butterflies, with his new team and his second best friend Vigilante played by Freddie Stroma, the team sets off on their mission. The show was written and directed by James Gunn, who previously wrote and directed The Suicide Squad and it’s no wonder why the show has so much heart. Gunn somehow redeemed a despicable character and showed the inner beauty about acceptance and family. You see all these characters and you’re supposed to hate them at first, they’re rude and ignorant and not to mention, killers. However you come to love the team as you watch them slowly come out of their shells and together as a family. The show is funny, dark, sad, beautiful and so much more as we follow Cena’s character reconcile with his past actions and question his code, “Peace at all costs”. Peacemaker struggles with his relationship with his father, his brother's death whom he feels responsible for and the death of Rick Flag. The show has its fair share of violence too but it's expertly used to shock us or even make us laugh and it brings a strange comfort watching this team of lovable unique misfits come together.

James Gunn is perfect at redeeming characters who same unredeemable, having previously worked on The Suicide Squad a team of mostly unknown characters, all lame and special in their own way and also working on Marvel’s Guaridans of the Galaxy, another team of criminal misfits. Gunn adds so much depth to the character of Peacemaker that it makes the likes of Superman look shallow. As a viewer we watch Peacemaker on his journey as he tries to overcome his corrupted ideology and make peace with those around him, no pun intended. Peacemaker has been met with critical acclaim and a season 2 has already been confirmed, with the ending of season 1 ending on a shocking twist. What do you think about the show and which character would you like for Gunn to spinoff next?

Euphoria, style or substance?

Euphoria season 2 recently wrapped up and fans are divided. The show blew up online with lots of new viewers this season around, but was it for the right reason?

The show was infamous for it’s stunning visuals and style in season 1 and earned its spot on the map, but with season 2 releasing it begs the question, is style over substance really enough? Can plot really be pushed aside for a couple of visuals, and is there a way to fix this the next time around?

The plot centres around Rue played by Zendaya as she struggles with addiction in high school, accompanying Zendaya is actress Hunter Schafer who plays Jules, Rue’s on and off love interest. There are tons of characters each with their own storyline but can the story hold the show up on its own? At the end of the day it’s a show about teenagers in school getting into unrealistic scenarios and fans are questioning if it’s really worth watching. The main plot of season 2 follows Cassie played by Sydney Sweeney as she has a relationship with her best friends ex, that is the plot for the whole season with a few sub plots that ultimately just kinda disappear.

Now not every sequel can be as good as the first but what can director and writer Sam Levinson do to fix this issue with the show? While we don’t have all the answers we asked some fans what they would want and here is what they said. 17 year old student Vince Perry wishes that season 3 has more resolution to plot lines that were left open ended in previous seasons and hopes that there’s more sense to characters actions. The show feels like it’s missing important scenes or lines of dialogue that would explain the way these characters are acting and solve some plot issues. Cast of the show have come forward to say massive plot lines were cut from the show, probably creating the mess of a season that has divided fans. Here’s to hoping Sam Levinson can strike lightning again with season 3. The cast give great performances and it would be a shame to see such a beautiful show go to waste.

Stranger Things 4, reasons you should be excited.

The gang is back! Grab your eggos and popcorn and get ready because here are some reasons to get excited for Stranger Things 4!

The last season ended with beloved character Jim Hopper, played by David Harbour, sacrificing himself to help stop the Russians from accessing the Upside down. We were all heartbroken but fear not, season 4 trailers reveal Hopper is alive and trapped inside a Russian prison teased at the end of season 3. We will likely see Hopped try and find a way out of the prison as Joyce, played by Winona Ryder, looks for him and plans to get him out with the assistance of Murray, played by Brent Gelman.

We saw fan favourite Eleven lose her powers during the season 3 finale. Losing her father Hopper, Eleven was adopted by the Byers family as they moved to California, away from her friends and suffering from the trauma she experienced in Hawkins, can she get her powers back? Set photos and trailers hint at a possible return of Doctor Brenner played by Mathew Modine, the evil scientist who kidnapped Eleven as a baby and experimented on her and her powers. Can Eleven get her powers back in time before he traps her in his clutches? Time will tell.

Speaking of time, season 4 trailers show heavy imagery surrounding clocks, more specifically the grandfather clock found in the Creel House, a new location linked to a murder of a family and whispers of a supernatural beast being responsible. We see the gang in Hawkins investigate the house and the mystery around it, while we don’t know much it’s easy to speculate it has something to do with The Vecna, the new villain introduced into season 4, and it seems to be targeting Max.

Season 4 also introduces a ton of new characters, such as Eddie, a charismatic teen who leads the Dungeons and Dragons club that our characters join. Eddie is played by actor Joseph Quinn. Another important character joining the cast is Victor Creel, father of the Creel family, institutionalised after murdering his family, but was he really responsible, or was it the mysterious Vecna. Victor is played by horror icon Robert Englund, famous for playing horror villain Freddy Krueger.

Stranger Things 4 is split into two parts with the episode length doubling. Part one drops on May 27th on Netflix and part 2 later on July 1st. Will you be watching one day one? What do you think will happen? Tune in later this month for our official review.

Lego Star Wars TSS is coming into light speed!

With the release of Lego Star Wars the Skywalker saga just a week away, here’s everything you need to know before you buy the game in this preview.
Traveler tales have been creating Lego games for decades now based on all of our favourite brands like DC, Disney, Jurassic Park and more. But which is their most successful and most popular game, Lego Star Wars of course, with them having created 4 games based on the brand already, so it only made sense for them to dive back in with the last movie in the saga having released a few years ago by creating a massive game based on every movie, with every character imaginable being playable and every planet being explorable, this is the true Star Wars experience.
So what are the features? Well you start by picking the trilogy you wish to start in. You can start with the prequels and play the movies in order or you can switch it up a bit and create your own path. Engage in fun puzzling missions set within the movies, get into dogfights in space battles or battle the most evil villains the franchise has to offer.
When you’re done with these levels you can set off into the massive open world and explore any planet within the saga. Traverse the sandy dunes of Tatooine or explore the harsh cold weather of Hoth, the choice is up to you. The game also allows you to explore the spaces between these planets, and if you explore long enough you might find yourself coming across a star destroyer which you can battle and capture for yourself.
You might consider playing this game and with the recent demo given out to players, reviews are looking good and it seems the five year wait for the game finally paid off. We’ll see you again in a couple of weeks where we give our official review and gameplay! May the force be with you.

LGBT inclusivity in gaming.

Did you know that 10% of gamers identify in the LGBTQ community, it’s approximated that nearly 2.8 billion people play games, that’s around 280 million LGBTQ gamers, so what has the industry done to provide a more inclusive and educational environment within games? Here are several ways video games incorparate the LGBTQ community in gaming.

For years LGBT characters have been popping up into popular games, with the first ever lgbt character appearing in Super Mario Bros 2, being a transgender character called Birdo. However Nintnedo’s use of the character has been often criticised by basing the design and character of Birdo off offensive transgender stereotypes. It’s time that companies start portraying these characters accurately and fairly and that’s exactly what Naughty Dogs have done with the Last of us Part 2. This game revitalised complex and important story telling by tackling important topics like sexual assault, sexuality and gender. They made a popular character from the last game called Ellie the main protagonist in the story openly lesbian and includes a love story between two women, they also made their antagonist a transmasc character, even then they made this character equally in depth as Ellie to the point where they can’t even be considered the villain. While not being a story about sexuality and identity they still managed to include these topics which makes the game just that bit better.

Most games give players the choice to make their character LGBTQ but few actually put you into the world of the LGBTQ community and that's exactly what Tell Me Why does. You play as Tyler, a trans man voiced by a trans actor as you explore what it’s like for him and the struggles that come with being openly trans. Here’s a quote from Blair Durkee, special consultant on video games to GLAAD, “It’s not like we checked the box ‘we have a trans character in our game’ no you play as the trans character, you get to literally put yourself into his shoes and experience what that’s like”. A problem within the industry is that they only include LGBTQ content when that's the audience they’re targeting, there is a whole world of non LGBTQ gamers who wish to be educated and wish to see this kind of content and that’s what makes Tell Me Why so special.

What about games targeted to younger audiences? You wouldn’t expect it here but recently within 2020’s Bugsnax, a children's game targeted to ages 3 and up includes two LGBTQ love stories. In a game where you catch and discover fun little breeds between food and animal none of us ever expected this kind of inclusivity especially in a game targeted to such young audiences, normalising gay or lesbian relationships for those children whilst also educating them on the topic in a simple way. Durkee also said while discussing Bugsnax’s LGBT story, “In reality gay people just exist, we exist everywhere, there’s no reason we shouldn’t be in a game about feeding bugsnax to grumpeses”.

There are games that require the player to design their own character, this goes to their appearance to their story to the choices you’ll make throughout the game. While many often give you the option to choose between male or female and include the option to have romantic relationships to the same sex, few have given the option to make your character transgender. In 2020 Cyberpunk 2077 released and not to great acclaim, however they did include a feature that allows you to make your character transgender, nonbinary and even genderfluid giving those not comfortable to assigning to just male or female more variety and freedom with character creation, later this year Hogwarts Legacy, a Harry Potter game, will include the same feature when it comes to designing your character, despite JK Rowlings opinions on the transgender community.

Elden Ring is finally here! Everything you need to know.

Within 30 hours of play time I have only just begun to unravel this games mysteries and set off on my journey through the lands between, proving that Elden Ring was worth the wait. I have fought dragons and demigods and yet I am no where finishing, this game has it all.
If the difficulty of From Software’s previous titles is a reason why you haven’t picked up any of their games before, fear not, as Elden Ring is easily the most accessible game to come from the developers yet. If you get stuck on a boss you can simply come back later, explore the world a bit, defeat some easier enemies, level up and come back. Player choice has never been so front and centre before allowing you to explore everything fully right from the get go.
Speaking of exploring, this world is amazing. So much work has been put into creating this world and it shows. The game somehow manages to be massive yet not empty, with so much variety between the lands. Different environments introduce different enemies. Hidden dungeons and mines in every corner and crevice on the map. Meaning there is always a stone left unturned, a boss to conquer and a dungeon or castle to pillage. There is so much here.
Well how does the multiplayer work? The set up can be confusing at first but once the game walks you through it playing with friends has never been so worthwhile before. Each member of your group feels integral to completing the quest. If you get stuck you can simply call in some friends and take down a boss together. There has never been a cooler feeling than running into battle with some friends and taking down an enemy that was too much for you alone. Players can also raid your world, given you allow them to, meaning you never know who you might come across, making the PVP always surprising and fresh as players with different builds and classes can clash with you.
So why should you pick up Elden ring? If you have a love for games in general or From Software’s titles then Elden Ring is a must have, with hundreds of hours of content and countless threats waiting for you. Elden ring has earned its 10 out 10s and is a strong contender for game of the year. What do you think?

Most anticipated games of the year!

After the drought that was 2021, gaming is back on the rise with many, over 100 in fact, games releasing this year alone. So what are fans most excited for this year and what games should you keep an eye out for? With three triple A games already releasing in the month of february there’s plenty to look forward to.

So far we’ve already seen the release of titles like Horizon Forbidden West, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2017 hit Horizon Zero Dawn, and with From Software finally releasing the long awaited Elden Ring, co written with titiualaur author George RR Martin, being met with 10 out 10s across the board, which games should you pick up now. We recommend Elden Ring, a massive open world filled with mysteries and dangerous threats with an interesting story and reasonable difficulty. If you’re looking for adventure or difficulty, Elden Ring is for you. However if you’re looking for something more gameplay driven where you can shut your brain off and just enjoy the mechanics, Dying light 2 is perfect for you. With the game being mostly a parkour simulator, with an added bonus of zombies, you’ll find yourself running and jumping between buildings in a beautifully crafted city set in South America, theres hours of adrenaline filled fun waiting for you.

But what's to come? How do you know you’ll like any of the games released? Well no matter what genre you enjoy or how you play there’s a little something for everyone. For younger audiences we have titles like Mario Kart 8 getting dlc twice the size of iy’’s base game, with 48 new tracks coming to game from the fan favourite Coconut mall to tracks based on cities like paris and tokyo, mario kart continues to prove itself as one of the best family friendly games out now. Another title the kids may enjoy is Lego Star Wars The Skywalker Saga, a gigantic open world set in the world of star wars, play through any movie, explore any planet, on your own or with a friend, there’s plenty of fun to have for children or older audiences looking for some nostalgia.

What if you’re looking for something more mature? No worries there’s plenty more to pick from. With massive titles like God of War Ragnarok, the sequel to the 2017’s game of the year, releasing this October, fans of the series and newcomers will be able to find something they enjoy this game, whether it be epic boss battles against gods, an emotionally driven story or exploring a world rich with lore, GOW Ragnarok is perfect for you. Looking for something more familiar? Gotham Knights is releasing this year. Whether you love Harry Potter, DC, Marvel or Star Wars, there is a game for each licence releasing this year.
